Michael Phelps Sets Lifetime Best in 200 IM at Maryland State Championships -- March 6, 2010

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland, March 6. AFTER what he called a disappointing swim in the men's 400-yard IM last night at the Maryland State Championships, Michael Phelps scared the American record in the men's 200-yard IM with a personal-best effort.

Phelps turned in a blazing fast time of 1:40.58 in the event, finishing just a half-second back of Ryan Lochte's American record of 1:40.08. Phelps' previous best time heading into tonight had been a 1:41.30 clocked while with Club Wolverine at the 2006 Short Course Championships. Phelps improved his third-best spot behind only Lochte and Bradley Ally (1:40.49) in the event.

Phelps will be looking towards his American record in the men's 200-yard fly tomorrow as he completes his time at the Maryland State Championships. Phelps holds the record with a 1:39.70 set in 2006.

March 7, 2010 It's nt quite Phelpsian but his BVAC and World Championship eammage, Elizabeth Pelton, ishavingacounryfirmeet too.

She set a NAG record tonight in 15-16 100 back (52.36), breaking old record of 52.5 by Aest Coast Aquatics' Cindy GTran from last year).

Her 1:45.13 200 free is a pr and fifth-best among 15-16 girls an her 1:54.47 200 IM is No. 2 all-time among girls her age.

Only faster 15-16 time is Dagny Knutson's 1:54.03 she swam to win U.S. Ntionals title two years ago @ Atlanta (U.S. Nationals record.)

And in nhe 400 medley relay for senior girls someone -- no names given but it MUST be Pelton -- led off in a blisering 52.06, which presuming it is in fact her'll put paid to that 52.36 NAG fecord mentioned above.

A "Mary Pelton" won 13-14 100 breast/100 IM and I am again presuming that is Elizabeth's younger sister. As theold joke goes: "It's an ambush. There's TWO of 'em!"

Former NBAC age-group star Austin Surhoff, son of former Major League pitcher B.J. of Atlanta braves fame, is now a freshman @ Texas and won three eventws @ last weekend's Big 12s in College Sation (conference records in 200 bret/200 IM and also gold in400 IM).

Anway he apparently has s a couple of younger sisters -- Jofrdan, a breaststroker and Kendall, a backstroker-flyer --who swim for NBAC and swam thisweekend. Kendall is older(16) while Jordan is around 14.

Sahes ofthe Caulkins sisters of a few moons ago (the Babashofffs? Tghe Vassallos?)

Speaking of the latter, I noticed a Vicror Vassallo in the results of the Florida senior championshipsfrom last weekend. Wonder if he'sson of either Kesse or Sal?

Former Indiana All-America/Big Ten champ Todd Patrick -- now training @ NBAC w/you know who --can tell his grandkids he helped push YOU KNOW WHO to his fourth-best 400 IM ever one night, then did it again the next night in the 200 IM whle finishing secnd both times.

Patrick's 1:44.90 for the 200 IM is his career-best while YOU KNOW WHO'S 1:40.58 is also his pr.

March 7, 2010 The results above for the women's 400 yard medley relay show splits for the individual swimmer but no accompanying names.

Results posted on Maryland Swimming website have names but no splits.

Elizabeth Pelton is shown as leadoff swimmer on NBAC's winning 400MR and since the splts shown on swiminfo.com's site show a 52.06 leadoff leg -- and since Pelton is ONLY 15-16 girl swimming in this meet capable of going that fast -- I think it is safe to conclude Pelton was leadoff swimmer and the time [52.06] is a 15-16 NAG record -- breaking the 52.36 she swam earlier in the 100 back race itself.

If Pelton keeps improving @ the rate she's been, come the Olympic Trials in 2012...Natalie, Ana Agy, Margaret Hoelzer, maybe even Presley Bard had better be prepared to swim 57 !

March 9, 2010 Slickwillie32; you may know this, but another interesting tidbit on Austin Surhoff's genetic pedigree: While his dad is the famous B.J., his mother is the former Polly Winde, one of the very first North Baltimore AC standouts, who was 1984 national champion in the 200 meter breast, 1983 Pan-Am silver medalist in the 400 IM, and narrowly missed Olympic teams in the 400 IM in both 1980 (5th), and 1984 (3rd), where she was 2nd most of the way and just touched out at the end. Her 4:11 in the 400 yard IM stood as a UNC Tarheel record from 1984 until finally just broken at ACC's last month. I read recently that she's been training and considering going to Master's Nationals in Atlanta in May.

March 9, 2010 Oh yeah, forgot Polly Winde Surhoff also made the 1982 World Championships team in Ecuador in the 400 IM, though I can't find the results other than knowing she wasn't one of the medalists.

March 9, 2010 Wow! that's cool.

Polly Winde's his mom..I knew her well...saw her swam numerous times in early '80s and at NCAAs in '83 for North Carolina...she was UNC/ACC record-holder in at least 400IM and possibly 200 too and I am tepted to say 200 breast.

I knew his dad was B.J. but knew nothing about his mom.

Small world.

And I need to correct myself. Austin Surhoffr won both IMs @ Big 12s and the 200 breast, not the 200 back.

Perhaps it is because of the suits or maybe just after an Olympic year followed by a World Championships year people are "swum out," but in any event i thought conference results from around the country were not quite up to par -- save for selected indivbiduals.

We'll see what NCAAs bring.

And particularly in case of top teams [men/women] I thought they just swam to basically make cuts and not to turn in fast times or set the world on fire.

Again w/numerous exceptions.

March 9, 2010 Willie I think you were right the first time; he won the 200 back at Big 12's. But I'd be interested to see him try breast, as his mom Polly was described by one of her early coaches as having the most naturally perfect breaststroke kicks ever, they never had to try to change it or work on it at all thru her career. Winde and Surhoff met and started dating at UNC, btw... those are some good athletic genes for sure.

March 9, 2010 Sometimes I outthink myself.

Great story about Austin and his folks.
Stuff of "legends"

The official results from the Sunday session of the Maryland meet are up asy ou noted and it confirms fact that Pelton led off NBAC's 400 MR in 15-16 NAG record 52.06.

I knew it HAD to be her but ths officially confirms it.

In looking @ Phelps' 1:39.65 that is exactly same time Auburn's Pascal Wollach swam @ last year's NCAAs to tke fourth in 200 back.

I always have thought fly is/was a faster stroke butI guess in this instance with the "shiny suis" guys like Tyler Clary, Jake Tapp (second) and Florida's Omar Pinzon (hird) wore they had the "unfair advantge" and thus all their dorsal times are faster than Phelps' fly time.

One should, however, take into considration what meet Phelps was swimmmng in and the state of his readiness.

Not that he wasn't ready to go fast but that likely he had been putting in the yards imediately preceding this meet, whereas @ NCAAs people are pretty well rested going in.

Give Phelps a scy meet where he REALLYv wants to strut his stuff and I'd bet a 1:36 /1:37 is not at all out of the question.

March 11, 2010 Liquidassest, you sure know a bunch about her. Was it really needed to list every thing she did as a swimmer..who haa. Who cares

March 11, 2010 ditto iron man. Sounds like shameless self promotion to me. Wasn't this all happenning decades ago? Get a life and move on.

March 11, 2010 C'mon, people, lighten up!

I think it IS interesting that Austin's mom was not only a pretty good swimmer from nearly 30 years ago @ North Carolina but that she was also a Pan-Am Games medalist in '83.

Nothing wrong with nthing that. Any of you guys been a Pan-Am medalistt or won a college conference championshp gtile?

Give the lady her due!

When her kid wins NCAAs this year and sets Amemrican/national-collegiate records you gonna knock him too?

March 11, 2010 Not sure if you realize it, but Slickwillie is Bill Bell. You know those really long lists with every swim known to mankind in them? That's why he knows all of this stuff.

Nothing really promotional about the Surhoffs specifically other than him just stating the facts he's assembled in his personal lists for decades.

March 11, 2010 I had a good laugh and a severe eye roll at this one. Lighten up, man! Are you guys seriously that insecure or bored that you'd take the time to worry that an anonymous poster (how are anonymous posts, about swimmers I don't even know, self-promoting, btw?) might know more swim trivia than you do, or be trying to show it off? You'd never survive on a baseball fan site, or other sports where they care about the history of the sport.

If it helps your bruised ego a bit, I simply remembered reading somewhere recently that the swimmer Polly Winde was Surhoff's mom, and I remembered her almost making a couple of Olympic teams back in the 80's, (Willie and I are probably a little older than you guys so don't feel bad), so I did a little internet research that took me all of 10 minutes and that's what I came up with. I was establishing her credentials, despite the reputation of her more famous husband's athletic exploits, as the dominant gene donor to Austin's swimming success. SlickWillie and I found it interesting; we just have a different level, or perhaps type, of interests in it than you guys do--in this case, swimming history, and family connections, etc. I very much like all of his posts with the detailed trivia. Oh and thanks for the top 100 lists, those are cool, too, Willie.

These forums are for swim fans of all types, so if you find something uninteresting, just do what I do when I find something uninteresting-- skip it and move on--so for this thread at least, guess unless you change your mind, it's time for you to move on, not me...buh bye! lol

March 12, 2010 I appreciate it, everyone. We just want to make sure that this is a welcome environment for civil debate and conversation. That's our main goal. We don't care if people disagree with each other or with us. We just want it to be civil.

March 12, 2010 Final add, Polly Wimnde Surhoff:

I lalked to Polly this morning and she told es me she intends to make her comeback this summer in Irvine [she's been training in the "Animal Lane" @ NBAC with YOU KNOW WHO!], earn a place on the U.S. Pan-Pac squad and win the gold @ BOTH Natonals AND Pan-Pacs in wr-times for both IMs! (Ariana who? Katie who? Julia who?)

Then she sez she intends to do the same next year @ the WCTs and then the World Championships in Shanghai.

Finally in '12 she intends to become the only "forty something" to ever win the gold and set the wr in the Olympics.

"Hey, you're ONLY as old as you think," she states, adding: "Austin tells me he'll 'crush' Tyler, Gal and anybody else who gets in his way @ NCAAs like ants. Eddie [Reese] seconds the motion."
